My internship is at Middletown High School south. I’m interning with the school social workers, on the child study team. The population that is served is students grade nine to twelve, with disabilities. Public schools are required by law to develop a process for identifying students with disabilities. The child study team works as a case managers to students with disabilities, that including students with learning disabilities. The students are tested, and placed in the appropriate setting, that best serves their needs.
Dropping/Adding Policy
One of the biggest issues that seems to cause a lot of conflict is dropping a class or subject for students with disabilities that are struggling. Though it is looked down upon, and schools usually

Therefore it leaves a gap for students with disabilities in terms of required testing, student observation, parents approval to change class course levels or setting. Though this policy is applied to all students, there is some exclusion the it comes to students with disabilities because there is a separate set of rules that apply to students with disabilities than students without disabilities. The strengths of this policy is that it’s beneficial for students with disabilities that are struggling and failing behind in class. Everyone has the right to an education. When it comes to human rights, social justice and environmental justice, this policy protects all students from attaining an education, especially for students with disabilities. By providing services to students with disabilities, it serves their rights to an education. Yes, approval is needed. But in order for this process to run smoother, there should be certain forms that need to be filled out. If handed in my a certain time, approval or denied request should be distributed within a certain time frame. This process can be time consuming which cause a student that is failing and struggling in the class to remain there until the case manager gets approval. If this policy is implemented in the child’s IEP the parents can consent to dropping/adding a class in order to prevent the student from staying in a failing class. This consent will allow the case manager to switch a student class, as soon as the issue is bought to their attention. If the case managers had permission to do so, that would lessen the use of the fail/pass grade to students that are failing a course. Most importantly it would eliminate stress from the student that is having a difficult time in the
