Students will have access to elevators, private rooms to take tests and students will have access to the resource room where they may work on class work with a teacher. The school needs to have employers that will be working in these areas and are certified to work in these areas. Special education teachers and paraprofessionals will be working with the resource room and the testing rooms. Paraprofessionals should be riding with the students in elevators and monitoring students in areas of the building where supervision is low. Hiring staff to work in these areas is a must for a school principal. One of the impacts of South High’s principal is to the curriculum. Modifying the curriculum to align with the needs of the individual students is a must in our educational environment. Educators must be trained in preparing activities and creating a proper learning environment for students with disabilities. New educators will have to be hired based on the demands of the 504 student needs. This year at South High 3 new paraprofessionals need to be hired due to the needs of 3 new students that entered the school.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ensures services to children with disabilities throughout the nation. IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and related services (Government, 2004). Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a document that must be followed by all educators and the school during the period of one year. The IEP will document the accommodations that must be given to the student to help that student succeed in the classroom. The IEP is a legal document and will be reviewed once a year, where changes can be made to the program as needed. Students with an IEP may have accommodations that require a least restrictive classroom to complete quizzes or test. They could also extend the amount the time a student has to complete and assignment. These programs and curricular changes must be followed by everyone to allow the student to be successful in the learning environment.
