In a professional setting, the first thing I do when greeting another person is extend my hand for a handshake. Also within those first few seconds of meeting a person, I make sure that I have a smile on my face and that I have a positive tone of voice. This interaction will set the tone for the rest of the meeting with a potential or established business partners. Meeting in person to discuss business is the best way to effectively communicate. The reasons mentioned above, as well as body language and eye contact are a few of the reasons talking in person is the best form of communication.

It is a lot easier to persuade clients or business partners by talking to them in person rather than using any online tools. According to Fusion (2016) “respondents overwhelmingly agree face-to-face communication is best for persuasion.” In business, it is very important to be able to persuade others to get your ideas approved and to move forward. If a business only uses online techniques, it will be a lot harder for them to persuade other clients or business partners to believe their idea is the best. Another beneficial skill of face-to-face communication is leadership and engagement. A company needs leaders who can present information to other employees and clients. By developing face-to-face communication skills, it will allow a person to engage effectively with others to get the best outcome. It can be hard to give concise directions to others without having the skills to able to do such a task. Face-to-Face Communication Most businesses today still prefer face-to-face communication. Even if society is changing to a more technology based way to communicate, many business owners still prefer to communicate in person. In a Forbes study, it surveyed 750 different business professionals and eight out of every ten said they preferred to conduct meeting face-to-face. It allows them to build stronger, and a lot more meaningful relationships with each other. No matter how comfortable the younger generation becomes with technology, they still need face-to-face communication as it plays a dominate roll in business (Fusion, 2016).
In a business setting, a person can give misdirection or leave a party unsatisfied if it is done over the Internet. According to a study done by UCLA, 93% of all communication is done nonverbally. Although online communication with social media, email, and other forms of communication can be convenient, it doesn’t allow a personal connection with the employee. In order to grow strong friendly connections with a client, it is beneficial to meet them in person. (Burton, 2013). According to Dr. Kate Roberts, who is a Boston school psychologist, anyone who relies on technology to communicate is starting to lose development in verbal skills as well as emotional intelligence.
