Have you ever thought about the emotional relationship tied to your eating habits? Have you ever eaten obsessively or not at all when you were having a bad day? There is scientific evidence that our emotional patterns can affect our relationships with food. Some are addicted to eating as a means of escaping emotional pain. Some even look at food negatively when they are confronted with emotions. It is simply because most do not know how to properly acknowledge and release emotions that do not serve us. Instead, we resort to addictions whether that is binging on foods, eating obsessively, or even purging on foods after meals.

It is important for people to dissect and analyze their relationship with food in order to identify where their negative eating habits come in. Informing people about something that isn’t so obvious or widely known will help be more aware of their choices and the way they feel. It will help people shift their life into something more healthy, conscious, and unique to them. With moving outside of emotional eating habits, people will find better ways to release their inner turmoil. Through informing them of this information, they will be able to recognize their issues and possibly find ways to better resolve them.
How exactly do emotions affect eating habits? “Focusing mental energy on food distracts us from what we are feeling or prevents us from facing feelings.” (Chad A. Buck) Therefore, eating can use a means of emotional suppression. Many do engage in emotional eating which produces more emotion which can result in feeling guilty about indulgence, or it can produce feelings of disappointment in oneself.
