This Experimental Variable Paper will discuss two journal articles, the first titled “Cookie Monster” written by Kelly McCarthy and published in Psychology Today; May/June 2001; ABI/INFORM Global pg. 30. The cookie monster articles focuses on a study which examines the relationship between food and your mood(s). The effects of food on the mood of a person, and the results of the study. It is insinuated that you may be using food to change your mood. The study that could not have involved the manipulation of the independent variable came from this article. Doctors are now comparing anorexia to a biological disease that may be initiated by environmental factors, i.e. stress and trauma. The reason these independent variables cannot be tested is because the dependent variables in this case would be genes and brain chemistry. These two variables cannot be manipulated. There is no single explanation for the declining of age, why the victims are now more likely to be boys, or more likely to be middle aged. Although new science may offer clues of this change, my follow-up question what would be what is the most efficient treatment for anorexia. The article mentions the Maudsley approach and Dr. Julie O’toole setting the parents straight by stating anorexia as a brain disorder. “Children don’t choose to have it and parents don’t cause it.” I would like to see an anorexia treatment experiment, and see what can help or cure this sickness.
