With the enactment of Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, the United States has started remodeling efforts to transform its highly flawed health care system, to give consistent, cost-effective, evidence based, and patient focused quality care that is open to all, and leading towards a higher quality health outcomes (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). The report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”, or IOM report for short, is resulted from the collaborative efforts by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The IOM report is an extensive review of the ways roles, responsibilities and education of the nursing workforce in America should change to meet the demands, complexities, and enhanced quality requirements in the evolving health care model. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the initiatives by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee (RWJF) on IOM report, and how the IOM report influences the nursing workforce in their practice, education and development. Furthermore a review of state-based action coalitions for the resident state of this author- Illinois, and how the objectives of the IOM report are accomplished in Illinois.
