The 1980s and 1990s were the epicenter of a massive shift to advanced technologies. One can make the case that humans have never made such great technological improvements in any time period of such brevity in our history. The advances in during that time period included the boom, meaning the creation or significant advancement, of technologies such as IBM’s personal computer, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), CD-ROMs, network storage, graphics processors, e-mail, Televisions, telephones, satellites, personal computers in general, and many more. Given that so much happened so quickly, it seems like an impossible feat to try to cover every piece of technological improvement brought on by changes in the computing field in the 80’s and 90’s. Thus, I will be focusing on a one segment of all that innovation, the one that I reason can be labeled as the most influential on our world – the internet. The internet has made an incredibly deep impact on the way our world operates, through globalization, communication, production and education. Furthermore, it has had psychological impacts. The World Wide Web (WWW) was the innovation that really helped to commercialize the internet and make it accessible to the average person. The internet can in sum be described as a network capable of creating connections between computers. In the 80s and 90s this came in the form of personal computers, which started to be utilized worldwide. The impact of the internet on education was revolutionary.…
