Social Media as the new era of Technology
It is very interesting how Rob key defined social media. He says that “this is not a direct marketing tool, this is human communication.” He states that social media is now the new form of human comunication in which it is just the beginig of the new era of communication. In the Article, “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted,” Malcolm Gladwell explains the influence that social media has on activism in modern times. Gladwell also states that people who are not willing to make any effort for a good cause receive power from the social media because of the weak ties that they are making (414). It opens the door to all people who want to spread or share message with someone who are in different part of the world. The communication is used for different purposes. As an example, Jenna Wortham says that she uses an app in which people can match. It is an online app called HowAboutWe (395). So many people use different type of app for communication. Those app works sometime to inform what is going on in a place in where you are not in and also to express freedom of speech. Gladwell explains the situation happened in Moldova in 2009 protest against the Communist government. The demonstrators got together because of the popular app Twitter (401). However, they are not using it too much according to Stanford scholar Evegny Mozorov (403). Nowadays, people are excited to share their ideas and more open to make opinions online with stranger. Furthermore, Wortham’s article show the way in which social media has changed the style communication regarding partner’s conversation via social media apps. Even though the author is aware that the apps were created to keep in touch with a partner not to replace the way of having face to face conversation, She is clear on the fact that dating apps have their own exclusive understanding (396-97). The protest for democracy was an event made by social activism group occurred in 2009 according to Gladwell. However, the essay reports that the majority of people tweeting were western journalists.
