Buy or Build Talent
Staffing an organization is a challenge for the Human Resources Team of an organization. The HR professionals have to verify requirements to develop duty descriptions, minimum and desired qualifications to attract both internal and external candidates who possess the talent the organization is seeking. Talent is a special ability that allows someone to do something well (Merriam-Webster, 2015). Therefore, talent is as much as, if not more than, technology is the driver capable of increasing or limiting the capability or capacity of the organization (Sullivan, 2005). As the leader of a company, you have to make the appropriate selection to keep the organization in a positive and competitive direction.
Buying Talent
Buying talent is a strategy that can target individuals, groups and/or entire companies to acquire for the express purpose of adding new talent (Brooks, 2014). It is a popular strategy that is used by many companies today to branch into a new market, change the direction, or when the internal pipeline hasn’t matured with the rate of growth. Talented individuals bring a new view to the organization which can support rapid growth and allow the current team members to mature into the next set of leaders for the company. Utilizing the buying talent concept has some disadvantages. The major disadvantage are the cost associated, potential disruption, and the risk of an individual not being a good fit for the organization.
