The Hero's Journey Analysis

(Compare and contrast the journey of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team (from the documentary Dare to Dream) with the journey of the N.C. State basketball team (Survive and Advance). Focus on the most significant similarities and differences. Use at least some of Joseph Campbell’s explanation of “the hero’s journey.” Focus on how these stories have similar themes but present them in different ways. Be sure to use ideas and terms from the course.

Dare to Dream and Survive and Advance both document the present life of two phenomenal teams. One being a women's team and one being a mens team. Both documentaries both begin with flashbacks. Two athletes that had two different outcomes. Jake LaMotta careers evolves around what was at a rise quickly became a fall. Although, he was an ambitious middle weight fighter who had struggled for years along with his manager brother to get a shot at the title for the middle weight champion of the world. LaMotta was frustrated with himself his mind is lead to a self destructive man. LaMotta who's inhumanity and self-destructive nature pushed him away from all the people in the world that love him and ultimately transform him from a prize fighter into an overweight sleaze with nothing left at the end. The One-eyed matador Juan Jose Padilla suffered horrific injuries during bullfighting. Padilla is the prime example of an athlete who never gave up no matter what obstacles he faced with. His story tells people to keep pushing and never give up in what they believe in. His passion of bull-fighting never left even after he had to go under-go a life-saving operation to repair severe damage to his eye, bone, muscle and skin. He yet didn't look at these bulls as his enemies even after those life-threatening moments he faced. Both athletes faced many difficulties in their careers with different outcomes. La Motta shows that even if you are the even if you are the best of all; you need to create witnesses, admirers and supporters of your skill. It's the only way to reach the top.
