As a leader within the field of social work, it is important to remember that our primary mission is to empower people that are vulnerable and living in poverty, as well as, to meet the needs of all people by enhancing their well-being and help ensure that their basic needs are met (NASW, 2016). Understanding the many global environmental issues that are taking place in the world is very important to know as a social worker, so that the effects of these issues are addressed and dealt with on all levels. Arredondo and Perex (2003) speak about how important it is to incorporate multicultural competence in the work of creating social justice and advocacy in order for professionals to effectively work with diverse clients. As a social work leader, one must have great social skills, have empathy, and have self-awareness of themselves and others when working with different cultures. Therefore, with these types of skills, a social work leader can make a difference in the lives of others locally and globally. The global environmental issue that will be further discussed is the recent tragedies in Haiti. Bases on various news broadcastings from NBC Archives (2010) and CNN (2010 & 2016), Haiti suffered terrible losses in 2010 and in 2016. In 2010, Haiti suffered from a severe earthquake that killed over 220,000 people. This natural disaster left many people without food, shelter, and security.
