The NASW Code of Ethics states, “Social workers pursue social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people. Social workers' social change efforts are focused primarily on issues of poverty, unemployment, discrimination, and other forms of social injustice. These activities seek to promote sensitivity to and knowledge about oppression and cultural and ethnic diversity. Social workers strive to ensure access to needed information, services, and resources; equality of opportunity; and meaningful participation in decision making for all people” (NASW, 2017). Macro level social work empowers clients by involving them in systemic change, rather than personalized aid. During my time there, I was a front desk assistant and could view and direct individuals to all the services the organization had to offer. CHS provides services such as residential group care, child welfare case management, emergency shelter, foster home management, adoption, and other vital programs to the surrounding Big Bend community (CHS, 2018). It was interesting to observe which individuals used which services and the impact said services had on their well-being. At one point, I discussed the various services and solutions provided with Kevin Winship, LMHC, the Director of Program Operations at CHS. His insight was vital in my acknowledgement of effective administration as necessary to effective social work. CHS is successful in its mission of improving the lives of families within the Big Bend community because its programming is multi-dimensional; the services improve multiple aspects of individual’s and families’ well-being. Unlike individualized practice, design of intervention and aid programs approaches the holistic problems of a community rather than the singular issues of a person.
