In America, free speech has been a privilege that has been used to its extent but that has also been criticized and censored. In the current state of our country, free speech has been both expressed and censored to a maximum because of different viewpoints that people have. The people who are trying to censor everyone else’s free speech do so because of various reasons that are essentially harming to our country as a whole. The reasons that cause for censorship of certain forms of free speech include coming to a disagreement, becoming offended, or preventing speech that is harmful to others. In today’s country, millennials are the most influential and the most affected when it comes to free speech. They have been the pivotal point of free speech in recent years because they are finally at the age to where they can fully comprehend free speech and use it to its full potential. They have also been the pivotal point because as many as there are millennials who want to extend their free speech capabilities, there are others that are pushing free speech backwards mainly because they have not been used to hearing what people have to say freely and are initially or even permanently against hearing statements or opinions that differ from their own. In this debate, various authors are arguing whether or not that today’s college students are actually trying to improve their free speech or tear it down and making it regress to ignorance instead of acceptance.
