Sommers's Argument Essay: Censored In America

Improved Essays
The famous phrase, “the pen is mightier than the sword”, is something that was cherished in America and still is today, but in a different way. I grew up in an America where this phrase was the very passion that was threaded into every American’s vein, it was the silver lining for every opinionated citizen and the only shred of dignity we could possibly possess when all else was lost. But, today it seems like the pen has lost its might and has turned away from healthy arguments and open discussion and to a new reign of closed mindedness and a world where only one opinion exists.
The liberals that once fought for freedom of speech, are now the ones fighting against it. This is seen now in the growing debate to allow government officials to

Sommers in her video on her Factual Feminist blog (Richardson). This new atmosphere is a threat to free speech and marks the death of healthy debate because new generations today are reluctant to listen and discuss. This phenomenon has become so rampant that students are now limited to a small triangle of concrete and whiteboard in a, “free speech zone” because others may find their words ‘disturbing’. If these students are considered adults then why should they be kept from the disgusting and brutal reality that not everyone agrees with them and basic social skills are now being lost because they are running to the safe space, “where cultures go to die,” an opinion voiced by Mark Steyn in his conversation with John Stossel. There is not any areas where there should be more or less free speech because it should not even be a question. To allow more free speech means that it is has been revoked and it should not be. To restrict free speech is then putting American people into the position of being a victim of their own rights, which in turn alters what we hear, see, and …show more content…
Citizens across the nation that believe in their First Amendment right, just like any American should, are not even fighting because they are unaware that there is anything to fight against. The population needs to see, hear, and feel the issues in order for any change to go underway, but many stories have been deemed ‘disturbing’ so, they go unheard of. Maybe one day the pen will be crowned victor over the violent sword and passion for debate and open mindedness will be pumping through every American’s heart, which is an America I want to live

Navneet Kaur English 120 Wendy Hayden November 1, 2017 Erwin Chemerinsky’s article “Hate speech is protected from free, even on college campuses” is a response to professor Robert’s C. Post on why all sorts of opinions should be expressed on college campuses, regardless of their offense and unpopularity. As students are disrespected by the thoughts of most conservative speakers, colleges have to shell out thousands of dollars for student safety and to allow speakers to deliver their ideas without any trouble. Chemerinsky, who taught law at UC Irvine, experienced this attitude when his students believed that school officials had the right to limit hate speech. As opposed to Post, Chemerinsky believes that hate speech should be addressed if…

Freedom of speech has always been a topic of conversation on whether or not we really have it, or it’s portrayed like we do so the American people can be content. There is plenty of proof on the fact that our freedom of speech is actually being taken away from us. Even now as our generation is more open minded, it doesn’t mean that we allow for anyone to have what they think is right, heard. Then whenever we question that our right is being taken away, we are meant with critiques that we are just babies and Liberal snowflakes that don’t really know what it is to not have freedom of speech. There are cases like with what happened with the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, which was taking a stand by kneeling during the national anthem as a way to protest against…

In the article, “The Indispensable Opposition,” Walter Lippmann expresses his concern regarding freedom of speech by using ethos and backs up his reasoning by using imagery, juxtaposition, and motifs. Lippmann explains that freedom of speech is technically right given to all Americans but becomes a matter of pure toleration when listening to one’s opponent. He builds on his point by offering to explanations to his argument. He says the that we protect the right of freedom of speech because we are unselfish and want to hear what our opponents have to say, or do we protect freedom of speech simply for our own sake and tolerate others in the meantime.…

In a diverse society, viewpoints are constantly in conflict. As a way to prevent this, some suggest that restriction on speech should be legislated or practiced through self-censorship, rather than robust free expression, which journalist Flemming Rose suggests is the best solution. In his book “The Tyranny of Silence”, Rose presents a number of well-crafted arguments in support of robust free expression, and addressed opposing views in such a way that I find his argument ultimately more effective. ` One of the arguments that Rose presents is that freedom of speech is the only way to counter extremism. In the marketplace of ideas, ideas seen as deplorable by most people will naturally fail to get positive attention they need to thrive.…

I found the article of "Camille Paglia: Women Aren’t Free Until Speech Is" interesting to read and to think about. It points out the issue of no freedom of speech, which is one of the biggest problems we currently have [1]. The free speech movement "erupted at the University of California at Berkeley in 1964" (Paglia). The movement began in a university that does not support the freedom of speech anymore. For example, the students took over the streets when a right-wing commentator, Milo Yiannopoulos, was going to deliver a speech there.…

In the article " Hate speech and the first amendment debating the 'Mighty' constitutional opposites" (para 2) What this shows is by limited what others say it's taking away their right to say what they want and the listeners right to fight back with their own words. Another quote is "As a society, we seem to have forgotten that free speech is central to our dignity as human beings as well as to intellectual and material progress," ( "Free speech is central to our dignity as humans para 3) In addition to what was said before limiting this freedom would not be a good thing because it is taking away not just the people who create hate crimes and speeches but everybody's. As well as that, many people would be in jail just by saying their opinion even if it is bad.…

In “Problematic: The Battle for Free Speech” Peter Wright, he has the same view on “safe spaces”. Wright states that safe spaces” creates an atmosphere that conflicts with the intent of higher education (which is the furthering of participant’s education and strengthening critical thinking) and the rules of the College as a whole.” One of the main purposes of college is to force you to have conversations about opposing viewpoints. In every class in college, there are open discussions.…

Free speech is often seen as key tenant to liberal ideology. Liberal ideology is the ‘commitment to the individual and the desire to construct a society in which people can satisfy their interests and achieve fulfilment’ (Heywood 2012:24). Liberalism promotes individualism and is resistant to forms of control, especially government control, that remove an individual’s freedom. Classical liberalism encourages only minimal role of the state with no interference in the private lives of individuals, where modern liberalism focuses more on state assistance in order to help individuals reach their potential – such as welfare and regulation of markets (Heywood 2012:25).…

The rights stated in the first amendment have always been challenged ever since the U.S. Constitution was established, this is especially true when it comes to the matter of freedom of speech. When it comes to being censored, modes of communication have been challenged with acts that restrict the freedom of speech and freedom of press. Due to restrictions, these modes are unable to successfully utilize their resources to their full capacity. Although we go back and forth with the argument between liberty and censorship, print media, television, and the internet, it will continue to be protected by the first amendment.…
