The first showing of symbolism that could be found is the sunset. Every time the film showed the sun setting it was a symbol for the end of something. The first time this could be noticed is after orchestra got shutdown and Diago had to find a new way to make a living. A second symbol that is shown throughout the film would be the stones. Diago’s father gave him a rough stone, which showed he was unsure about his future. The stones were used to represent how they felt and thought about that person. If someone was given a smooth white stone like Diago did for his father, it meant happiness and that he was in a good place. These stones played a big role through the plot as they are what led to Diago finally being able to forgive his father. There are also many repeating sounds that occur during this film. The first sound that could be noticed with its repetition is hearing the wrapping of the silk around the bodies at the funerals. This is able to show how Ikuei and Diago both were very precise in the preparing of the bodies. A second one is the dripping of the water in the bath house after the woman who owned it had died. This sound was representing the end of the bath house as the camera showed many shots of the empty rooms. Coming along with these sounds is the music of this film. After Diago started his training and showing flashbacks of his father, I knew that eventually he would be the one to do his father’s funeral. This made the film seem like it was too long for me personally, as it keeps building to one inevitable ending. I did enjoy the music and insight that this film provided me. This film was able to bring up a topic that most people fear, and remove some of those fears in my eyes. To me that made this a great film, because it was able to teach many life lessons. I found it strange how much time and work was also put into this film as well. That shows the true dedication these actors had in sending their message to a large number of people. I also found this film to be sad and inspiring at the same time. It was sad because death is always a sad topic to be discussing. However, the inspiring part of this film is even though everyone insulted Diago for his career and said he was filth, Diago was able to block it all out and show great amounts of respect and honor at all of the funerals he performed. This shows how one should not worry about what other people are saying, but have faith in themselves. These lessons are what made this film stunning to
