Summary Of The Film 'Favela Rising'

Favela: in Brazil, an urban slum or ghetto; illegal squatter settlement. This is how the film Favela Rising begins. It begins by describing what a favela is, which I am glad it does because this is a term that I have never heard of before. This film discusses what life is like in Brazil and goes through different slums in Brazil. It was made to inform and show people what the slums were like in Brazil and to give the audience a glimpse of what life is like for them. The target audience is for a mature audience, due to the sad and violent parts of the film and it is for people who want to know about the life of people that live in Brazil. The film is about a particular favela in Brazil and focuses on the life of Anderson Sá. Anderson was a past druglord and the film goes into great detail about what these favelas were like. Even young kids are dealing drugs in this area to make money. In August of 1993, many people died because the police came and shot innocent people in the favela. Even Anderson’s brother died, which hit him really hard. Because of this huge massacre, they wanted a revolution. I really liked how it showed the sad part of the slums and Brazil before it introduced the music because it really showed how much of an affect music can have on a culture. It was fairly easy to follow along in the film. The organization was great because it started out introducing the culture and then bringing in the musical aspect of it. The only thing that made it a bit difficult to watch was that it was in a different language, so I had to look at the subtitles the whole time, which made it a little more difficult for me to pay attention to what was happening in the actually film because I was trying to read the
