Floyd Lawton a 47 year old man who was born in Chicago Illinois, but now resides in New York City tells me about his life of crime. Lawton who is now preacher at the local church was once a drug user, shoplifter, and carjacker and amongst other things tells me his life and how he got involve in the world of addiction and crime.
Growing up in Chicago according to Lawton was not easy, he had a mother who was sick with cancer and a father who was an alcoholic, but wasted no time to get drunk and take his anger out …show more content…
As an example; if a person would turn on the television to the news, the head story is most likely a crime committed in the city or nation. Turn to the nearest action thriller, and it can be shown crime is shown there as well. A person can even turn to a comedy or watch their favorite cartoon and there are jokes of crime, and violence. Crime is everywhere including books, the radio, and televisions. Culturally, Lawton was taught how to commit crimes and even get away with crimes socializing him to act as a delinquent. Shoplifting, assault, carjacking, drug using and gambling were all taught to him by means of media and family. His family who includes his uncle and father have all committed some sort of crime, as a result Lawton has become proficient in committing the same crimes. One of the biggest crimes he had committed as a delinquent and adult was larceny. However, he claimed they were mostly committed through social influences. After Lawton’s wife left him and took his children he was under a lot of pressure, what made it worse was that his mother died a few years after. However, the bonds that kept him to the society was already decaying. Especially with the taught that his mother was sick, his father being a drunkard and the neighborhood in which he lives was on the collapse. Lawton did not have any mentors nor role models, he did not participate in any religious activities and the unemployment rate was high, which made it difficult for him to find a job that was worth holding on
