Throughout the semester we as students have read many different pieces of literature that have helped characterize Chicago. With many opinions and various perspectives to consider Chicago is a twisted city, nobody is safe from its grasp. The city, being divided, has made it difficult to accurately depict Chicago's true nature. Some may say that the city brings nothing but wonder and amazement from the eyes of a tourist however, what lies beneath the tales of wonder is something gruesome. Through Chicago’s literature, Chicago can accurately be described as a city of evil, there are examples of intense crime and violence throughout history that’ve occurred downtown. During our studies we discovered the true crimes …show more content…
With a castle built for those that’re sick and twisted Holmes made headlines with his killings. It wasn’t until people came to discover what really went on in the city that it earned its dangerous title. We know that the city is a place for precaution when Larson explains that, “Vanishment seemed a pastime” (Larson, 102). During the building of the World’s Fair people went missing to never be seen again. With all the distractions that the fair brought the Police force couldn’t handle the protection of the general public. A city in constant motion makes it easy for criminals to float on by without notice from supposed authority figures. Having read Kristopher Weiss' Death Leads To Manslaughter Charge For Brighton Park Man by Ed Komenda and Kelly Bauer my faith in the Police force is lost. Kristopher Weiss had been beaten and found dead in the streets, nobody had stepped up and helped him. A police report confirmed that it was the fall on the curb that had killed them when it was issued that, “On July 22, officials found Weiss, 45, with a severe head injury in the 3000 block of …show more content…
With the city constantly changing important things have been swept under the rug. It takes a tragedy to unearth the dangers that lie within the city and for protection to be placed. Once again the city has failed to protect its people. With this failure to protect comes great judgement. After the first documented serial killer had been found in Chicago people were amazed as to just how oblivious people were to how dangerous the city can be. Being constantly surrounded by strangers you have to watch your back. Although there are protection services they don’t always catch the villains until it’s too late. We recognize Chicago’s failure to protect in Devil In The White City when Larson says, “..and the local prosecuting officers not only to prevent those awful crimes, but even to procure any knowledge of them” (Larson, 270). After the media exposed HH Holmes for his psychopathic tendencies and murderous ways people began to feel unsafe. This feeling was due to the lack of skill and care displayed by the cops when girls would go missing in the city of Chicago. They always chalked it up to the opportunity that the city held being what excited these girls but as they sat there these girls were being viciously attacked and murdered. The promise of great things makes people blind to the dangers surrounding them. Back in the day when a great mobster Al Capone was living in Chicago he resided
