The Declaration of Independence has been taught in schools as the document that gave the United States. In fact it is considered to be one of the most important documents in American history. The document signifies colonist struggle, where blood was shed all for the sole purpose of gaining their freedom. This was one concept that the colonist thought was being taken away by the British. Colonist felt that they had the same rights as any englishman living in Great Britain. That is the reason why the quote, “We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal” can be found in the Declaration of Independence. This quote was intended to make it clear that all men are the same, therefore, none should be superior to one another. However, that was not the case for slaves and poor white men. Slavery was still around for a long time even after the document was written. All men are created equal is what the constitution stated, but it failed to apply the rights to the male slaves. Slavery was not officially banned until 1965 which took place 100 years after the Declaration of Independence. This did not benefit any of the African American population. The counterargument would state that slaves were viewed as property and not as a human beings. However, male slaves were not the only ones that were excluded from this. Poor white men were also not part of this right. If a white male was poor, they would not get any of the privileges that the document granted for the other wealthy white men. These individuals would not be able to vote or have any saying in the politics because they would not be considered an educated person so they could not vote. The only type of people that benefited from this were the rich white man. The wealthy men were the only individuals that the document was referring to.
