The Black codes or as some people know them as the Negro codes, were another set of laws that oppressed blacks once again. Many think that the negro/black codes were just implemented just in the south; however, the code was strictly enforced in the Illinois as well, which was considered the north then. This code happened to be different in the north than in the south, but they both held black people back in many ways. In the south the black codes obstructed freed blacks ' activity and ensure their availability as a labor force, but this only was put into effect after the civil war. The Illinois black codes, only allowed blacks to work as servants, who may seem good, but they were not able to make any type of money at all. What does this mean for blacks? This servant job basically means that is very hard or very close to impossible for blacks to earn living, which means that the black could not support themselves, or their family. Not only was Lincoln for African Americans struggling, he also had “four specific areas in which he would support discrimination against blacks: voting, serving on juries, holding elective office and “intermarriage” with whites.”(Oakes 129).
