Even though Lincoln died, many new political leaders who had their own plans came to fill the void left by the death of the president. These new politicians were called Radical Republicans and had two main goals in mind, first, they blamed the south for the war and believed that they should be punished and secondly they wanted to help all of the over 4 million now free black people. They believed that it was their duty to defend and protect the now free African American population. During this time there were three major Radical Republican leaders who were known as Charles Sumner, Thaddeus Stevens, and the new president Andrew Johnson. First off, Sumner was a senator who fought for the rights of African Americans as well as their right to become a citizen of the USA. He felt that the words “all men are created equal” should apply to all men, even black men. Thaddeus had very much the same ideas as Sumner, his concern was on the economic opportunity for African Americans, and he wanted them to be able to make a living without the help of white people. Lastly, there was Andrew Johnson, who had a similar reconstruction plan as the former president Lincoln.
