According to Covey, paradigms are the core of how I think about things and how I behave and relate to others. Covey describes Character ethics and personality ethics. Character ethics involve integrity, humility, fidelity, temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry, simplicity, modesty and the Golden Rule. Covey believes personality ethics in our day has replaced the old days of Character ethics. Personality ethics involve having a positive mental attitude and focuses on behavior, skills and techniques. Personality ethics look on the outside, and focus on what we look like to others and how we respond while people are watching, where character ethics look at our own inside at our character and motives.
Paradigm shifts are all at once or little bits over long periods of time. Recognizing a paradigm shift takes practice. A person can live their whole life without noticing and shifting their viewpoint. “The more aware we are of our basic paradigms, maps or assumptions, and the extent to which we have been influenced by our experience, the more we can take responsibility for those paradigms, examine them, test them against reality, listen to others and be open to their perceptions, thereby getting a larger picture and a far more objective view.” (Covey, S.
