Performance gap in any field is a means for concern but none more so than the performance gap that is in the education field. This gap can affect future aspects in all areas of life. There is one means of bridging that gap and it’s by addressing the neuroscience of learning. For many years, curricula have been design for learners who are “book smart,” unfortunately learners who have print disabilities struggled. Simplifying the curriculum, which sometimes dilutes helpful context, does not overcome learning barriers and does not make the educational instruction more accessible. What does make educational instruction more accessible is creating, from the onset, multiple means of learning that can be imbedded in the curricula. …show more content…
According to the CAST website, UDL is the” practice of embedding flexible strategies into the curriculum during the planning process so that ALL students can access a variety of learning solutions.” It is a blue print for designing a curriculum that address the different needs of all learners (Meo2008).
There are three principles of UDL which are: Multiple means of engagement, Multiple means of presentation, and Multiple means of expression. The basic idea of UDL is that what works well for a wide variety of people with various functional abilities works for everyone This accessibility ensures that all learners will have 100% equal access to all course material without needing to ask for anything special.
Steps to implementing UDL in classroom curriculum are to, relook at curriculum, reexamine instructional strategies, and use the UDL solutions table. The end result will be a curriculum that provides multiple means of presentation, multiple means of engaging and multiple means of expression giving each student access to their learning style and ability.

Comments such as: “This makes me understand how I’m different as a learner” and “I understand how I can maximize my learning” can be heard in the classroom. The understanding about how they learned better encouraged students to become better partners with their teachers in the learning process.
Common core presents challenges and UDL presents opportunities. It rips to shreds the barrier to success that many disabilities create. It’s the flexibility in the curriculum that determines how successful students are. UDL Accommodates common core standard
The common advice echo from district to district s was the advice to start small or slow; master a core group first, implement UDL principles one lesson at a time. Collaborate and share material. Provide training and support. Another recommendation from school district suggestions was to have UDL advisor
