For that, the history of child abuse should be analyzed. When the Industrial Revolution started, many families depended on the work provided from there to sustain a family. Many times early school kids would work either at the mine or the factories. It was a regular way of life for families in the U.S. It wasn’t abnormal. Actually it was up until the late 1800’s that the way a family dealt with it’s youngster was private. It was around that time that a mother by the name of Etta Wheeler brought up to the attention of child abuse to the courts. She wasn 't the only one either. Many mothers around this time period began to realize what their roles with children were and that they needed to protect kids from unfair mistreatment. Research shows that children with parents who abuse alcohol or drugs are more likely to experience abuse or neglect than children in other households (Dube et al., 2001; Hanson et al., 2006). So already the United States has a factor to use when investigating parents. This research actually helps law enforcement when needing probable cause to start an investigation on a family allegedly reported for child abuse. This gives them probable cause to look into the matter when they either arrest or have a parent in custody for drug and alcohol abuse.
Other factors that correlate into child abuse are stress, divorce, sickness and disabilities. The first one stress is one that nearly all parents go through. It’s an inevitable possibility for a parent to be a parent and not go through stress. Not all the time is stress caused from kids, but it can also occur because of work, family, social life, or even being over worked.
