Just because a child behaves bad at a young age doesn’t mean that he/she will always behave bad even when he gets older. Many of us tend to believe in that a personality of a certain child will remain with him/her even when she gets older. That applies to some children and does not apply to other children. A research done by Joto, Christopher and Tackett, Jennifer has an answer to a belief that we still have.
Background information:
The research focused on how a child’s specific behavioral tendencies cohere into adolescence and how these traits develop across childhood. Not only this study focuses on child’s behavior for his future actions but also how it may affect him later in the future how it will relate to his social and …show more content…
According to Christopher (2015), “First, adults’ traits are organized hierarchically, with broad, higher-order traits subsuming narrow, lower-order ones (Markon, 2009). Second, the Big Five trait dimensions—extraversion (sociability, assertiveness, energy level), agreeableness (compassion, politeness, trust in others), conscientiousness (organization, industriousness, reli-ability), neuroticism (anxiety, depressiveness, emotional volatility), and openness to experience (intellectual curi-osity, creativity, aesthetic sensitivity)—constitute a par-ticularly valuable, foundational level of the adult personality hierarchy ( John et al., 2008).” After conducting this particular key points of an adult personality, we all tend to build the same question in our head, “does this apply to youth”.
Similarities/Differences:
Well since youth are also a human, a personality of an adult may apply to certain personalities of youth. The research found out that youth also have their personality traits organized hierarchically just like an adult. There are also many differences between a child’s and adult’s personality. The Little Six Personality Dimension which a term used for measuring a early childhood to early adulthood change. The study conducted that psychological traits maybe captures by six major dimensions which include extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, …show more content…
The personality structure may shift from Little Six to Big Five. Study states that Little Six is primarily defined by physical energy and motor activity. As the child moves onto early adolescence, these characters become less prominent and the meaning of activity can change and it can include physcological aspects such as motivation and competitive drive.
Connection to my textbook:
Such study changes the way of thinking for many individuals who had false thoughts in their mind. I would of personally have never guessed that a child and adult can have similarities in their personalities. Especially the way its structured is what has shocked me the most. The study relates to my textbook in some ways. The book doesn’t compare a child’s personality and adult’s personality or at least we have not gotten to that yet but it sure does talk about the change in child’s personality as he/she starts to shift into early adolescence.
