They learn through their environment, experiences and the people around them. Children need a stimulating environment to develop and keep important synapses in the brain. The brain takes in the world using the five senses so children’s emotional, social, cognitive, physical and language development are shaped through these experiences (Gable). So our environment really has a huge impact on us as we grow up. A study by Nicole Bush showed that children who grew up in neighborhoods with a higher crime rate, fewer social supports and less social connectedness, have higher social and health-related problems. The way children are raised and the environment in which they are raised in has a bigger impact than we usually realize.
