The debate of nature versus nurture has been ongoing for quite some time. Which one influences us more? Is it nature? This provides our genotype, or our genetic code. Or is it nurture? This is our environmental influences in the origins of behavior and mental processes (Rathus 56). Both of these contribute to who we are, but which one impacts us the most? This is what psychologists have been trying to determine for years. Sure, nature plays the role of determining what we look like physically, but does it help us develop as a functioning human? Eye color, hair color and height are just a part of who we are. Our personality and intelligence also play a significant role in our lives. Nativists, people who strongly believe that nature plays the greatest role in our lives, believe that maturation guides how we grow to be attached, our language and our cognitive development and that our individuality comes from our own genetic code (McLeod). So as we grow, our genes become more apparent and our true personality comes out with age. Personally, I do not completely agree with that. I think our personality does grow as we age, but I think it has more to do with our surroundings and the people we surround ourselves with. I do not think when we are born, our personality is completely there but as we grow and experience new things, it shapes who we become.
