One of the largest concerns in the economy today is the underaged consumption of alcohol. This has become a major problem in recent years as it has led to an increased number of drunk driving accidents as well as other alcohol related incidents (Choose Responsibility). As a result of the cumulative occurrences over the years, Congress has had a difficult time determining the appropriate age to legalize the consumption of alcohol. There are numerous reasons as to why many believe the drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18, although there are many arguments against it as well. As of currently, all 50 U.S. states have set the minimum drinking age to 21. However, exceptions do exist on a state-to-state basis for the consumption at home, under adult supervision, or for medical reasons (Drinking Age). This is just one of the many reasons people believe the age should be lowered to 18. In the United States, 18 is considered the age of adulthood, therefore, adults should have the right ot make their own decisions about alcohol consumption. Also, allowing 18 year olds to drink in a supervised environment would more than likely decrease the risks associated with drinking activity. According to Drinking Age, the rate of traffic accidents and fatalities in the 19802 decreased less than that of European countries whose legal drinking ages are lower than 21.
