Analysis
When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold
When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail

Holden, as this first verse suggests, was dealt a bad hand. He has undergone traumatic events that no child or person should have to endure; he has been molested, has watched someone commit suicide, is addicted to drugs, and watched his little brother suffer and die of cancer. Holden takes a few taxi rides while galavanting around the city. The second line represents the taxi ride in which Holden continues to question the driver about the ducks in the pond, and their profound (or rather profound) meaning. This verse as a whole, as Holden has the money to leave the meter running. The last two lines represent Holden’s desire to rid himself of all that is plaguing him, whether that be his identity crisis, school issues, lack of closure with Allie, or his painful relationship with females.
He said allahu Akbar, I told him don't curse me
But boy you need prayer, I guess it couldn't hurt me

This unrequited love
To me it's nothing but
A one-man cult
And cyanide in my Styrofoam cup
I could never make him love me
Never make him love me
Love me
