As a conceptual approach to health care, the biopsychosocial model aims to provide an understanding for how psychological and social factors continually interact with biological influences in disease and illness. Developed by Dr. George Engel, the biopsychosocial model places value of lifestyle and health related behaviours as influences in health and in disease. In comparison to the earlier Biomedical Model, which focused purely on biological factors, Engel believed psychological and social factors had contributions to the cause, prevention and treatment of disease (Lakhan, 2006). In an effort to combine biological, psychological and social factors, the biopsychosocial model can be utilized to create a more comprehensive picture of disease and health.

For the purpose of this assignment, the biopsychosocial model will be used to appreciate the biological, psychological and social influences in the presentation of Frank, a 62-year-old man, who has begun to experience the symptoms of dementia. As self-reported by Frank, poor job performance, forgotten appointments and frustration with himself caused him to take an early retirement package, ending his career as managing director of a firm. In an effort to understand how the onset of dementia is currently impacting Frank’s life, and how it will continue to do so into the future, it is important to consider the biological processes of the disease.
