This article talks about a book. This book is called “The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life.” It was written by Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murray. This book created controversy over why social stratification divides our society and what should be done about it. This book makes eight major claims. Some include: people with more “general intelligence” tend to be more successful, half of our human intelligence is given to us by our parents, and our society is dominated by the “cognitive elite”. The “cognitive elite” are people who are not only better educated but also more intelligent. Personally, I don’t agree with all of the claims. This article was a little interesting and sort of informative. It wasn’t the best article I have read in the last few weeks.

Social stratification occurs according to variables such as wealth, income, education, gender, race, sexuality, age, and ethnicity. Most people stick to the ideology of individualism. Stratification is often seen to be the fault of individual people rather than a social problem. Chris rock points out that a social structure is to be blamed for social stratification. Most people have internalized the idea of possessive individualism. This can make explaining social stratification very difficult. Society places a great amount of importance on an individual’s pursuit of wealth. This can cause people’s worth to be determined by wealth. I believe that we should determine people’s worth by what’s on the inside. People go through events in life that might prevent them from getting to what we call successful. That shouldn’t determine that they aren’t worth much. This video was a lot better than last weeks. The new speaker was more energetic than the last. I found this video to be both interesting and
