Social classes are groups of people who share a similar position in the system, or in separation of ranks and wealth within societies. Authors Janny Scott and David Leonhardt believe that social class “is still a powerful force in American life. Over the past three decades, it plays a greater role in important ways, success in school remains linked tightly to class and advances in medicine show difference in classes and the lifespans between classes are wide and appear to be widening” (Scott, Leonhardt, pg.2). To make up the social system we have three different classes the rich, the middle class, and the poor. The rich class hold most of the economy’s wealth and brought in on average in 2013 “$639,400” annually. The middle class in 2013 brought in “$96,500”. “The current poverty level is estimated to have earned between $18,000 and $23,050 per year” (). That means the rich have 6.6 times more wealth than the middle class and around 31.2 times more than the poorest class. “The distribution of wealth and income need not to be equal it must be to everyone’s advantage” (Rawls, pg.694). From the statistics above we can see the distribution is nowhere near equal but it also not an advantage for the poor. A person cannot provide a decent life for themselves let alone a family with that kind of income. We do not have to take away from the rich instead as a society come up with a plan or more
