Analysis: The Banking Concept Of Education

While reading “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education” by Paulo Freire it brought me back to when I was being taught in AP Biology back in high school. Many teachers believe that education should be taught through the “banking” concept. This is a system where teachers deposit information into student’s heads for them to store the information and memorize it for tests, quizzes, etc. This doesn’t allow the students to inquire the information given to them. By this “Banking Concept” students aren’t benefiting in a way that will impact them in the future, all that is being done is, “receiving, filing, and storing the deposits” given to them (216). Throughout AP Biology my teacher tested this concept when it came time to write reports and test experiments, he allowed us to inquire …show more content…
Freire created a list “a-j” of the “banking” method, where he describes point “a” and states “the teacher teaches and the students are taught” and point “b” when he states that, “the teacher knows everything and the students know nothing” (217). Which was not part of my classroom in AP Biology, I experienced more of the problem-posing method style from my teacher. Instead of the teacher teaching the students, he believed that it was important for the students to work out problems themselves and inquire. This allowed for discussion to arise in the class and communicate ideas as to what we thought was going on in the experiment, report, etc. Problem posing allows people to question who they are, what they’re doing, and how things work. Being in this environment was fairly frustrating at first, when you asked a question he would ask the same question back to you and walk away most times. By my teacher walking away and asking the same question back, it allowed for us to problem-pose and create the freedom of what we were trying to solve in our own
