Many women become reclusive and isolated from other people as a result. Battered women experience ongoing anguish and agony during and after the abuse, but even still not all groups in society accept and provide support and understanding to the situation. Some people criticize battered women for being weak and not leaving their abusers when red signs start to appear and make it apparent that the relationship is toxic. There are others that belittle and minimize the problems of battered women as something insignificant or even remotely an issue that does not need to be addressed. Others try to be supportive, but in the making fail and make the abused women feel worse and even more powerless because of their inadequate ability to properly assess and handle such a sensitive issue. This is why the Women 's Center for Gender Justice in John Jay College of Criminal Justice is such an essential organization in society. The organization seeks to help those with experience in the past or currently with abuse. It allows the suffering women to recover and receive support after experiencing such dehumanizing and deprecating treatment. Jessica Greenfield told us that it was founded in 1994 by female students attending John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She said they advocated for the creation of the organization so that they would have a safe place for activism. They wanted their needs to be addressed and in order for there to be attention brought upon their concerns, they purposely created an environment of activism on campus. This exactly what the Women 's Center for Gender Justice does. It provides students with support regarding the issues of parenting, relationship violence, sexual assault, racism, gender discrimination, and practically anything that students could possibly experience. Currently, to accommodate the situation and circumstances of students on campus in the 21st century, they changed their name from the Women 's Center to the Women 's Center for Gender Justice. Their intentions for the name change was to include other students that would require support or justice. As of now, their main focus is on LGBT issues, which is currently an evident problem in society as those part of the LGBT group do not receive the same equal treatment, experience discrimination and torment, and etc. Nevertheless, the organization is designed to help outsiders like introverted battered women become insiders in
