An insider is someone who belongs to a religion and study his own religion by already being a part of it himself. This person has a deeper connection to his religion and follows his belief. An advantage of being an insider is that they know what is going on and why they are obliged or prohibited from doing something. A disadvantage could be that because they already belong to that certain religion their study maybe biased based on their belief.
An outsider is someone who does not belong to a religious group that they are studying about and have very little or no knowledge about the religion itself. A disadvantage is that he may have lots of prejudice about the religion and its believers. Thus, he has harder time figuring out the reasons behind
