The American Freedom

The United States of America, the land of the free, the land of freedom, opportunity, liberty and justice for all, also the only country in the world with most of it’s citizens locked up. No other nation in the history of mankind has so many of it’s people locked up. It is the sad reality facing our nation today, with only 5% of the world 's population, the United States houses over 25% of the world 's inmates. (Crime & Punishment) The incarceration rate in the USA is 714 per 100,000 residents which is 40% greater than Russia, the Bahamas and Belarus. Our incarceration rate is 6.2 times greater than our neighboring country Canada. (Glenn Loury) Our government, discrimination and the lack of education is the part of the problem, but also our solution. How could be that a nation that takes so much pride and honor for its citizens freedom be depriving so many of them from having that freedom?

According to CBS news recent reports show that the American incarceration rate has triple since 1980 but the overall rate of violent and property crimes has declined by 45% over the past 2 decades. Over 2.4 million Americans are behind bars, and the majority of those crime are not considered serious violent crimes, but are drug related. (Loury 5-6) Over the last decade, the US government has made it their main focus to arrest those who are caught with illegal drugs.
