When an immigrant leaves their home country in order to come to America, they have many hopeful wishes and things that they want to pursue. Coming to America is another way for people to find themselves, escaping something that they feared in their hometown is a perfect reason to come to America. Immigrants can also do things to benefit themselves and their loved ones. Immigrants leave everything that they love and care about behind in order to pursue a better life for themselves and their children. Immigrants may want to pursue a better education, job, and a better life. (These things are part of the American dream.) Unfortunately, the American Dream is only available to certain races. Ifemelu, the main character in Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, realizes that America is not what she was told. For many immigrants the American Dream is really an American Nightmare. Ifemelu went to America hoping to seek happiness and a better education. Ifemelu is a young African woman from Nigeria that migrates to America. Ifemelu’s skin color has a huge impact on her life in America because in America many different opportunities come based on the skin color you have. Ifemelu is comfortable in Nigeria because in Nigeria nobody is judging you based on your skin color and how you look. In Nigeria, Ifemelu could wear weave or leave her natural hair out. In Nigeria, people who live in Nigeria would only judge you based on your wealth and education, never your skin color.…
