The Aging Process

As we grow in to adulthood, many things start to change in our life. Aging is an unavoidable process, beginning at conception and ending with death. The process does not proceed at a uniform rate all over the body. As we age, the organ systems of individuals age at different rates. Our body gradually slows down in early adult life. These changes are not apparent until perhaps 50 years of age as they are not perceptible. The skeletal system gradually changes over the years until it is porous and brittle, as the bones lose calcium and their density. This may be more pronounced in women with menopause. Testicular tissue mass decreases and the level of the male sex hormone testosterone stay the same or decreases very slightly. There may be problems with erectile function. The tubes that carry sperm may become less elastic. The testes continue to produce sperm, but the rate of sperm cell production slows. The epididymis, seminal vesicles, and prostate gland lose some of their surface cells but continue to produce the fluid that helps carry sperm. The prostate gland enlarges with age as some of the prostate tissue is replaced with a scar like fibrotic tissue. This may cause problems with urination as well as with ejaculation. In the cardiovascular system, a decrease in the elasticity of the blood vessels and heart valves, restricted blood flow due to the thickening of the vessel walls. The fatty deposits lining the vessels, and a decrease in the ability of the heart to pump out as much blood with each beat. This will make you feel fatigued, become short of breath more easily and have less capacity for physical exertion. To counteract some of these effects, maintain a normal weight, exercise regularly, stop smoking, and reduce salt, sugar and fatty foods in your diet. If people do this, they will be able to tolerate natural changes more easily and still live a normal life. Muscular system there tends to be a gradual loss of muscle tone, elasticity and strength.
