Since the birth of black-and-white television in 1928, TV has remained the most popular form of transmitting information to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Its endurance is attributed to the diversity of television programs, which caters to a wide audience of needs and wants despite the prevalence of the Internet. So why do people actually watch television nowadays? We can answer this by taking a look into the purposes of TV – to entertain, educate, inform and influence.

Most widespread television nowadays aims to entertain the audience. Shows like this tend to be popular hits such as Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Big Bang Theory, just to name a few. For example, The Walking Dead is a popular TV show featuring a cast ensemble in a post-zombie apocalypse setting. Each season’s arc has unexpected plot twists and turns, leaving you guessing what the next episode would be like. The drama and excitement of such a show is to make it easy for you to take your mind off your problems just by sinking comfortably into a chair, relinquish control of your thoughts, and keep you coming back for more. Moving on, another form of TV with the intent to entertain is reality television. ‘Jersey Shore’, ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’, and ‘The Bachelorette’ are some reality shows which has garnered a negative reputation due to their emphasis on shock value rather than good content.
