Brené Brown’s The Power of Vulnerability, a Ted Talk presented in June of 2010, is a very multifaceted presentation with many different layers of argumentation ripe for analysis. Brown uses her ethos to build rapport on her emotion-based subject. Her credibility relies on her Ph.D. in Social Work, the experiences working in the field she has, as well as her seemingly sage wisdom even she admits was hard to swallow all contribute to the audience’s understanding of her credibility. She creates an extremely convincing pathos through personal stories and experiences, such as admitting her own habits, quirks, and stories that only go to further her point on her ideas of shame, worth, and belonging. Brown continues to even utilize the power of logos…
“I cannot make you understand. I cannot make anyone understand what is happening inside me. I cannot even explain it to myself.” quotation by Franz Kafka. In the novel “Speak”, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, there is a girl named Melinda Sordino a freshman student that lost her friends because she called the police during a party where she was raped by a guy named Andy Evans and ever since that day she has changed into another person.…
Survival and vulnerability are two themes which appear totally independent of one another, yet both are universal human experiences which often coexist and influence an individual’s behaviour. It is human instinct to survive in dangerous situations, to protect oneself from potential harm. It is also human instinct to hide one’s vulnerability from others out of fear of those vulnerabilities being used against them. In Russell Banks’s short story “Lobster Night” he explores the relationship between gender politics, survival, and vulnerability when Stacy and Noonan reveal personal stories of weakness and survival to each other. Despite this newfound connection built between the two characters when both Stacy and Noonan expose their vulnerability,…

The Extremes of Self Discovery An individual may struggle all of his or her life to figure out who he or she is as an individual for the duration of his or her life, usually beginning with one’s past. The past always has a way to seemingly define a person’s personality and characteristics. As a result, depending on the type of past that a person has experienced, as an individual matures he or she will try to go against his or her upbringing and family situation while other individuals may attempt to hold on to the past in order to discover his or her roots. This notion of self-discovery was explored in “When I Woke Up Tuesday, It Was Friday” by Martha Stout in relation to trauma victims.…

Fear and it’s Influence on Defining Moments Coming face-to-face with your fears can be intimidating, but at that crucial moment, what would you reveal about your real character? Crises often pose life-defining questions, and the answers to them divulge the truest intentions and personalities. Conducting oneself at the peak of pressure is perhaps one of the most complex tasks to manage, yet at some point in everybody’s life, they all wind up doing so. It takes only a moment to make the one decision which changes everything. Sarah Ellis’ “The Tunnel” conveys how the protagonist, Ken, overcomes the greatest obstacles in his life in a split-second, to follow his moralistic ideals of right and wrong.…

I watched the video very powerful. Great topic, just today in my group session a client had shut down and walked away. This was due to her being vulnerable and feeling shame. Well I could certainly feel her pain at that moment. I was thinking to myself my own vulnerabilities.…
Another limitation of existing vulnerability assessments is that vulnerability quantification methods are not necessarily developed in a way that mirrors the theoretical foundations behind the framework, such as the risk/hazard theory, political economy, and political ecology. These theories examine how natural hazards impacts in a community are determined by everyday patterns of social interaction, social organization and unequal access to resources (Warf 1997; Eakin and Luers 2006; Sheppard 2011), and often drive indicator development in frameworks such as the SoVI, VSD, or SVI (Cutter, Boruff, and Shirley 2003; Hahn, Riederer, and Foster 2009; Tate 2012; Vincent 2004; Flanagan et al. 2011; Polsky, Neff, and Yarnal 2007). Several studies often employ OLS as a preliminary tool for determining…
INSERT INTRO SENTENCE HERE WHICH IM BAD AT THINKING OF. The textbook describes self-disclosure, which is closely related to vulnerability, as “the intentional revelation of personal information about ourselves that others are unlikely to discover in other ways.” This means that, in order to make yourself completely emotionally vulnerable, we need to explicitly disclose information about ourselves that the person we are having a conversation with would have a hard time finding out otherwise. Like all forms of communication, self-disclosure is a process that takes place between people who are getting to know one another.…
