Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease, caused by a bacterial infection that usually starts as a painless sore. There are three stages of symptoms in adults. These stages are known as primary, secondary, latent, and late syphilis. Several years ago, it was almost extinct in the United States. Syphilis is on the rise again due to the increase of the number of gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with other men. Having syphilis also increases the chance of developing HIV/AIDS..The first traces of syphilis were found in Western Europe in the late 1400s to the 1500s, but no one really knew what it is. A formal discovery of syphilis was discovered in 1905 by Fritz Schaudinn and Erich Hoffmann. Furthermore, syphilis cases are mainly reported by groups of people from the African American and Hispanic racial background. In 2013, 37.3% of all syphilis cases were found in African Americans,while 19.9% of cases were reported by Hispanics. The most recent cases of syphilis have been predominantly found 50% more in men than women. Syphilis is also found in a bunch of regions, not just one, but is usually found in poorer areas due to the fact that they usually can not afford to get treatment. Syphilis can be caused by any type of sexual activity including oral, anal, or vaginal sex. Syphilis is caused by any direct contact with a syphilis sore.
