A group of “retirees age 60 and up, says it is uniquely poised to work at the radiation-contaminated plant,” in hopes fix the meltdown of the plant. (Lah) These older folk sacrificed themselves for the good of not just ones close to them but, an entire country. Riding Giants a surfing documentary that looks at the evolution of surfing and surfers, illustrates many instances when people step up and risk themselves for others. An instance being how the people in riding giants would ride in and try to save the crashed surfers. Surfers at Pe’ahi would often crash so they had people on jet ski’s standing by to rushing and grab the surfer. The waves at Peahi are strong enough to kill so the fact that people are willing to rush in and (hopefully) save you in daring. The surfers life is on the line but the jet ski person is also in grave danger as well if they get knocked off the jet ski. Into the Wild a book written by Jon Krakauer shows traits of when one will survive at all costs. Chris McCandless, the main character from the book, decides that he would give up everything and live as a minimalist essentially. This decision is an odd one and a path that few have traveled. For example Chris McCandless (Krakauer) killed a moose while in the wild to survive. He felt terrible killing it but it had to be done. McCandless later noted it was one of the sad tragedies in his life. McCandless’ regular nature would not have been to kill that moose, but given the circumstance that he survives or the moose he went for the clear option. This is not to say Chris had not hunted before, he had many times. But he was not hunting for fun if he killed an animal he intended to eat it. So to see this moose he killed go to waste it was really a sad moment for him. Lord of the Flies a book by William Golding is about boys who are stranded on an island by themselves forced to learn how to survive on their own. In the book the kids, before the crash, were good schoolboys; but faced with the circumstance they need to learn how to survive off the land. Many of the kids change into something they could only read about; the kids had to change their mindsets into kill or be killed.
