When I started working at Clovis Community Medical Center hospital, I encountered a variety of patients from different ethnic backgrounds. As a Nutrition Care Clerk, my job is to ensure that patients meet their therapeutic diet needs and receive the best quality care during each interaction. Often times I have noticed that patient care was compromised due to a language barrier. I took the initiative within my department to address the language barrier by petitioning to my department director that we translate our therapeutic diets menu from English to Spanish. I was content with my work, and I saw the positive impact that the translation of the menu made. However, I continued to see people from other ethnic backgrounds, that spoke another language aside from Spanish that faced the same communication barrier. I wanted to make sure that people that spoke another language benefited from having a menu that they would be able to understand. I brought up the idea to my department manager of taking the same concept and translating the menu to other languages, such as Hmong and other languages. Since we have such a diverse population of patients, we as a hospital would benefit from providing a menu that would help explain to the patient's therapeutic diet and their choices. I took on the responsibility of guiding and helping my co-workers through the translation of the patients menu to another language.
