Acceptance for the refugees is finally and clearly shown by the chapter titled “Halloween.” While the locals will never fully relate to the refugees they do make a conscience effort and most develop an understanding of where the refugees came from and the type of adversity they faced there. This level of acceptance is most notably shown when a woman is startled to see, “dark-skinned faces and white eyes peering out from behind black plastic sheeting.”(260). She then recovered from the unexpected sight and extended a box full of candy through the doorway. Even though the woman was startled at first, she was able to see past the boys differences and treated them how she would any other child. Through this last portion of the book we learn the fugees don’t win the championship cup at the end of the season, but the personal growth the boys develop stretches fair beyond their season Through the efforts made by Luma and her team they created a network to help support the refugees and their families. This network helped the refugees to connect with one another and assisted in getting the resources that they needed.
