Personal Narrative: Diversity At Yale

I have a friend with blue skin and red eyes. Although this statement may not be entirely true, I often find myself around some of the strangest but most amazingly unique individuals. There are more than seven billion people on this planet. Human beings of all different ethnicities, cultures, physical characteristics, and personalities exist everywhere. I was introduced to this grand perception in greater depth when I attended EXPLO at Yale in the summer of 2014. The scales on my eyes had fallen off and I perceived people in a new light. Diversity is a beautiful melting pot of dissimilar qualities and talents coming together to create an enormous and remarkable community. I developed a love for diversity. EXPLO at Yale helped augment my newfound adoration. EXPLO at Yale brought together seven hundred students from around the world to fellowship with one another and discover new passions. Each person was unique in their own special way. I befriended a young man from New City, New York filled with joy and an apparent love for sarcasm. I met another male from Chicago, Illinois whose sole purpose for waking up each morning was to look good and …show more content…
Her words resonate with me; diversity is the one thing the human race has in common. Since my time at Yale, I have taken up the initiative to branch out and meet people I would not normally associate myself with. I embrace diversity because it allows me to learn and come into contact with new things. I am not your prototypical African-American; I play lacrosse and I attend a predominately Caucasian school. There are other people out there like me who have gone beyond the boundaries of their “stereotypes”. Diversity allows people to grow and move beyond the limitations set for them. When one thinks of Iowa, one does not necessarily think of cultural diversity. The more and more I think about it as I have matured, it was exceedingly challenging to grow up as an Asian in my community. That is because I sometimes had trouble understanding the culture of others and my own culture at my young age. When I was younger, I found it very challenging to understand many of the things my peers and teachers were saying figuratively. For example, I had difficulty understanding jokes, so I took them literally and did not know they were joking.…

I agree with many of the points made by Woodson in this book and for the points I could not directly relate to, I could reflect and see validity in his statements. I like that he tries to instill confidence in Black people by telling them that their history did not begin with slavery and critiquing the way slavery and black history is taught. He addresses the issue of not hearing about our own, history, culture, and accomplishments while we praise the work and accomplishments of white people. He critiques the learning system because it does teach Black people that they are inferior and many people don’t get to see anything different unless they do outside research or if they are fortunate enough to go to college and take an Africana class.…
