This book has multiple events that fully support what I am trying to get across to you. As these soccer teams were forming, the refugees started to get to know each other and even discuss their pasts. Later in the book, they had some trouble with gang violence and the soccer coach, Luma, had a discussion with them and made sure that no one on the team was involved in such things. " 'What makes people want to join a gang? ' Luma asked the boys" (St. John 141). It says, "Studies also increasingly point to the social benefits of sport, noting that increased participation in sport can assist in reducing crime and anti-social behavior, and building social cohesion" (RCA 10); this means that having refugee sport programs can reduce the chance of them becoming criminals and also helps them fit into our society. Later I read, "due to the fact that refugees have often suffered torture and trauma, the process of settling in a new country can be far more difficult and distressing for refugees compared to other migrants. Initiatives which promote physical and mental wellbeing and positive community integration are particularly important for refugees, therefore sport programs have the potential to be of great benefit to the refugee community."
