End of Year Reading Assignment The Help by Kathryn Stockett is historical fiction. It is a mesmerizing book, with several twists and turns. Kathryn Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in English and creative writing. She moved to New York, where she wrote The Help. The Help took Stockett 5 years to write and it was declined by 45 literary agents. Now The Help has over 10 million copies sold, a major motion picture, and it was nominated for Best Picture in the academy awards (Official Book Website).
Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s, was were Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan returned to after attending college. Determined to become a writer, she starts on a story that changes the south. With help from Aibileen Clark and Minnie Jackson, two black maids, they rewrite society’s standards and the history of the south. The Help takes place in the 1960s in Jackson Mississippi. She has raised 17 children in her lifetime and picked cotton during the depression. She is the first black that Skeeter interviews for her book. Aibileen doesn’t think that change is ever going to happen at first, but as the book goes on, her attitude slowly changes. Minny Jackson has a big mouth.
