Although Minny also discriminated by other white people in some public services, there is a difference between Hilly's treatment towards Minny and Celia's treatment. Hilly treats Minny in a rude way she is not only accused Minny of stealing, but also she started the rumors. She has been telling people that Minny is a thief. Skeeter points out how white women destroy the reputation of those they hate that is why Minny cannot find a job. On the other hand, Celia treats Minny in a good way. Of the many themes To Kill A Mockingbird and The Help share, one of the most prominent is the theme of courage, when one is not afraid of standing up for what they believe in and doing what they know to be right, even if it could harm them. Some perfect examples of this courage are all of the maids from The Help who shared their stories with Skeeter, knowing there could be trouble as a result. An example of this courage from To Kill A Mockingbird is Atticus, who knows that he and his family might come across some trouble because he is defending Tom Robinson, African-American. But Atticus also knows that it's the right thing to do, so he doesn't let the fear of what people could say or do to him because of his actions stop him.…

Additionally, Miss Maudie says in the book, “‘The handful of people in this town who say fair play is not marked White Only...’” (323). Lee supports the theme of morality through diction because she uses the words “handful” and “fair.” Specifically, these words show that Miss Maudie thought that the verdict of Tom Robinson’s trial was unjust, and she was disappointed that only a few people in her town think that white people are equal to black people. The equality between races is a highly controversial issue that requires people to make moral decisions.…

Because of these deeds, Hilly expects Skeeter to assist her in publishing her idea on the “Sanitation Initiative.” For Skeeter, this relationship is not worthwhile because she does not agree with Hilly’s beliefs and behaviors.…

Skeeter does not believe this is the right way to treat anyone and decides to write a book from the maids point of view. One scene from The Help that showed skeeters reaction was when all of the girls were at Elizabeth 's house and started talking about how black people should not be allowed to use the same bathrooms as the whites.(Taylor) Skeeter felt absolutely terrible about this and was shocked that they would say all of these terrible things, especially in front of Abilene. At one point she felt so bad that she personally went up to Abilene and apologised for the things that were being said. This shows Skeeters moral beliefs because she is making it very clear that she thinks that we should all be treated the same.…

White people will always be more privileged than people of color in all aspects of life despite their tries of attempts of acknowledging these struggles. Lily, at multiple occasions throughout the novel, displays this behavior toward people of color, African Americans particularly, for the obvious reason that she is white. When staying at the Boatwright house, where her mother’s housekeeper, August, lived along with her sisters, Lily thinks about her stay at the house and is surprised that August is more “cultured” and “intelligent” than any other black women she’d ever known, to which she immediately thought that she “had some prejudice buried inside of [her]” (78). During this instance, Lily revealed to herself as well as the reader the bias she held toward African Americans that they are “unintelligent” and “uncultured” usually, with August being the “exception.” Lily’s prejudice serves as an example of how white people view people of color, especially black people, as being people who are beneath them.…

Ironically, this divide based on colour of skin changed how individuals lived.as coloured people belong in a poor and environment, compared to white people who belong in a rich and luxurious city. This social divide has created false attributes towards both sides of town: coloured people are referred to as ‘dirty’ and white people are referred to as ‘normal’ people. In other words, white people are held even more superior and coloured people are treated and respected much worse. Coloured maids are not able to express their emotions, but rather obey every they are given by a white person, as if they are robots or slaves, not human beings. This social divide has driven the plot of this novel, as Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter eventually begin to take action against this racism, leading to next argument, hope.…

Student: Teresa Nguyen Class: English Communications Date: Grade: 12 Teacher: Mrs De Blasio What film techniques does Tate Taylor use to engage the viewer and present the ideas of injustice? Director Tate Taylor, in The Help, explores, through the lives of black maids, the injustice and imprudent judgments made towards the African American community in the 1960s. Camera work, dialogue, mise-en-scenè, and colours reveal the juxtaposing lifestyles of the racial classes, and the lack of development in society’s treatment of coloured people. Sounds expose the inferiority and challenges that African Americans experienced in attempting to display basic human behaviours, whilst historical context refers to the Jim Crow laws that…
