Throughout the course of the humanity’s existence, we have often mused, explored and sought means of making the unseen forces within our world tangible effects to better understand our connections with our spirituality. Part of what makes humans different than other species, is our never ending pursuit to comprehend what we cannot see beyond the physical realm. With much uncertainty of what lies ahead in our own lives, and the mystery of what happens to our spirit or soul once we leave this world, one would find it imperative to look towards the heavens, and within one’s self, to uncover what connection we have to a greater power. Within this section of the Hindu verses, we discover that yogis are reassured a freedom of their bodies and they become united with the God they had worshiped while practicing the Vedas. “I shall now declare unto thee, O Best of the Bharatas (Arjuna), the path, traversing which at the time of death, yogis attain freedom; and also the path wherein there is rebirth.
Fire, light, daytime, the bright half of the lunar month, the six months of the northern course of the sun—pursuing this path at the time of departure, the knowers of God go to God” (Bhagavad Gita, VII vs 23-24). Here, the yogi is promised their reward of following the particular path as described in the texts. The above mentioned stanzas actually contain symbolic references to yoga and its importance to a practicing yogi. (Yogananada) For one to be fruitful in his or her search for God to reveal himself, they have to focus the prana upward towards this holy light which is concentrated within the brain. If the yogi is truly successful in being devoted to the scriptures, while aiming their soul towards an enlighten state, God will reveal himself to the practicing advanced yogi. The purpose for these verses, in this chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, is to seek liberation and to be centered through meditation.
