When you hear the word suicide what do you think of? Suicide is the act in which someone kills themselves for many reasons. In the world today many teenagers are pushed to ledge of suicide because of bullying. Although we may not see it, many consider it everyday. There are many organizations that help support those who are suicidal. Not only there are organizations, there is also songs, movies or even books that can help support those in need. One song in particular is “Make It Stop” by Rise Against. In this song we see how bullying can lead to suicide.

Flipping back and forth between their lives we see different aspects of what led up to their suicide attempt. However, unlike some songs we are given their names and basic understanding of their lives. This connects with people because we are shown these are actual people. For those struggling with depression, bullying or any other aspect that makes them consider suicide, they are shown that even someone who is bullied for the way they are can make a big difference in world. This is shown towards the end of the song. At the end we see all three of their futures and they all are very successful. This shows that suicide is not the right answer and everything will get better in the end. One critic explains that this song “shone a light on LGBT students who, even through merciless bullying, have chosen life over suicide” (Bojalad). It means stop the suffering and the bullying. Suicide effects everyone around them. Parents, friends and loved ones are hit with unbearable pain from this act. Suicide is caused by variety of reasons. Many of these reasons can be avoided or helped. However, a lot of people don’t recognized the signs which lead up to suicide. This song makes some people realize a few signs. In it we see bullying the main cause for their attempt. Each student is isolated in their surroundings with no one standing up to help. If more people stand up for each other, suicide can be avoided. This song also is called “September’s Children”. In September 2010, nine gay students committed suicide. This song was created to recognize what happened and to avoid so many deaths. Towards the end of the song, the main signer says five out of the nine names along with their age. The names he reads out are Tyler Clementi who was eighteen, Billy Lucas who was 15, Harrison Chase Brown who was 15, Cody J. Barker who was 17 and the youngest one Seth Walsh who was 13. By doing this he is shedding light to the big picture. He is showing things that has happened that could be avoided. Even if someone didn’t know who these people were, they could easily look them up because each one has their own story to face.
