Song Analysis: Make It Stop

When you hear the word suicide what do you think of? Suicide is the act in which someone kills themselves for many reasons. In the world today many teenagers are pushed to ledge of suicide because of bullying. Although we may not see it, many consider it everyday. There are many organizations that help support those who are suicidal. Not only there are organizations, there is also songs, movies or even books that can help support those in need. One song in particular is “Make It Stop” by Rise Against. In this song we see how bullying can lead to suicide.

Although we may not see the main point at first, we can figure it out by studying the meaning within the song. “Make it stop” is a prime example of this. With the hidden meaning within the lyrics to the stories it plays within the music video, we can interpret the song many different ways. One critic explains “the powerful defiance that this track embodies combined with its chilling choral backing vocals and McIIrath’s incomparable voice make it a must-listen” (Barkhuizen). The main point of this song is to bring awareness to bullying and suicide. It is a way to show how a big event can lead to another devastating event. By standing up for those who go through the same brutal process each day, we can stop acts of suicide and the events that lead up to it. Even the song gives hope when it all seems lost. By showing that the pain and suffering will soon end, people considering suicide are shown a new light. Rise Against has created a masterpiece in which we find hidden meanings.
